True Growth
In 2003 the Greater Saint John region of New Brunswick, which includes the City of Saint John the towns of Grand Bay-Westfield, Rothesay, and Quispamsis, and the village of St. Martin’s launched a new program, called the Growth Strategy.
The Growth Strategy took a holistic approach to economic development, placing its emphasis no only on the corporate sector, but also on the other pillars of the community, specifically post-secondary education, the arts and culture sector, research and development institutions, schools, recreation, and neighbourhood amenities. Basically anything that helps us help each other. It premised that in order for the region to grow, a balanced approach amongst all aspects of a community is needed – an approach that creates a quality of life that attracts and retains residents.
The initial strategy contained seven priorities, one of which was to encourage new investment in growing sectors – specifically information technology and communications, health care, tourism, and energy.
The Atlantica Centre for Energy grew out of that initial priority.
