On March 23, 2023, Irving Consumer Products Limited, an affiliate of J.D. Irving Limited, announced Royale tissue products have been certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust.
The Carbon Trust is a non-profit organization with a mission to accelerate the move to a decarbonized future by partnering with leading businesses, governments and financial institutions to accelerate their route to net zero.
Royale’s certification covers all tissue products sold in Canada (bath, facial, napkin and towel tissue products) from cradle to grave, in accordance with the PAS 2060:2014 standard. This includes the carbon footprint of input materials, production and distribution of the products.
A large part of Royale’s carbon offsets come from land management. The company harvests less than two per cent of the forest it manages, to ensure more wood is grown than it harvests each year. The Irving Forest Supply Chain started measuring Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions in 2008 and has reduced its emissions intensity by 37 per cent since then.
“Ensuring Royale tissue products remain carbon neutral is one step in the fight against climate change and is part of our overall commitment to caring about the environment.”
– Stewart Van Horn, Corporate Vice President, Environment, Health, Safety and Operational Excellence at J.D. Irving, Limited
Its carbon neutral explanatory statement for 2021 provided an accounting for removing all emissions for the 310,362 tonnes of tissue products they sold during the year.
The company highlighted its ongoing commitment to carbon neutral though its carbon management plan, which focuses on fuel switching, energy efficiency, increasing forest growth, and increasing sold wood product production.
Actions planned for 2022 and 2023 outlined in the carbon management plan included switching 100,000 tonnes of woodchips to travel by rail instead of truck in central New Brunswick (saving 3,500 tonnes of GHGs) and reducing waste to landfill from its production facility in Georgia (also saving 3,500 tonnes of GHGs).
