The Centre of Excellence for Energy organized a two-day experiential learning event to give teachers from across New Brunswick the opportunity to tour several of the province's energy infrastructure locations. The Centre of Excellence for Energy is an initiative of New Brunswick's Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) to provide learners with innovative virtual and experiential learning opportunities and to connect them to experts in the community.

As part of EECD's Summer Learning Week, on August 9th, educators visited the Irving Oil Refinery, Saint John Energy Headquarters and NBCC Saint John campus, and on August 10th the group also toured NB Power's Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. About 18 teachers had benefited from the opportunity to extend their teaching beyond the classroom by touring the sites and asking questions of the employees who provided the tours.

Quotes:

"I feel I have more information to bring to my students about pathways to take to get in the energy sector. I can't wait to talk about my visit at the nuclear station."
                                                                                                   – MJ Poitras, Riverview High School Teacher

"If we want students to think 'New Brunswick' first when planning for their future, it's important to expose them and their teachers to the opportunities that exist in the province. By opening their doors to tours like this, our industry partners are helping to educate the next generation about the innovations and jobs that exist here."
                                                                                     – Adam Trider, Lead, Centre of Excellence for Energy

"It was mentioned numerous times what careers are needed and how to go about getting into those careers, what jobs you can do and even how fun they are."
