Statement from Stephen MacMackin, Chair, Atlantica Centre for Energy on the passing of James K. Irving.

Saint John, NB – On behalf of the Atlantica Centre for Energy, it is with deep sadness that we hear the news of J.D. Irving, Limited, Chairman, James K. Irving’s passing.

Mr. Irving was a proud Canadian and New Brunswicker leading J.D. Irving, Limited in a loyal career that spanned 76 years. He was a builder and perfectionist, with a work ethic to match.

Mr. Irving believed in investing in people, infrastructure and community. This focus ensured J.D. Irving Limited’s presence diversified and grew across Atlantic Canada and into the United States. The business now employs more than 20,000 staff, but remains firmly rooted in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Similarly, Mr. Irving was a dedicated philanthropist and conservationist, working to better his province by investing in people and community.

Due to Mr. Irving’s dedication and innovation, the business is strong and well-positioned to continue growing and evolving into the future, and to remain an important contributor to Atlantic Canada’s economy.

J.D. Irving, Limited has been a long-time valued member of the Atlantica Centre for Energy. As New Brunswick’s largest private sector employer, and one of the largest consumers of energy in Atlantic Canada, James K. Irving’s business legacy will continue to inspire the Centre’s work to build a stronger energy sector and more prosperous region for everyone.
