On Thursday, April 18th, winners of the 2024 Canadian Biomass Awards were unveiled. The Belledune Port Authority was awarded an honourable mention for Community Project of the Year for their work to develop the Port into Atlantic Canada’s biggest exporter of wood pellets and chips.
The inaugural 2024 Canadian Biomass Awards celebrates exceptional companies, communities and individuals working to grow Canada’s bioeconomy.
The Belledune Port Authority was nominated for its leadership in working to grow wood pellet and wood chip volume for the last six years, soaring from 223,000 tons (pellets and chips) in 2018 to more than 510,000 tons now. Much of this locally produced renewable biomass is shipped to Europe to replace fossil fuels in heating and electricity production in the United Kingdom.
This export growth has occurred because of strategic investments with the Port’s partners in a new storage facility and terminal expansion.
More information on the award winners will be shared in the spring 2024 issue of Canadian Biomass Magazine.
The award categories were:
- Champion of the Year – individual award
- Company of the Year – company award
- Thought Leader of the Year – individual award
- Community Project of the Year – community award
- Lifetime Achievement – individual award
